Healthcare Has a People Shortage. AI Could Help Solve It.

Healthcare already faces shortages of physicians, nurses and staff. The better question isn't which jobs AI will replace, but how it can give scarce healthcare workers more time for care.

Healthcare has a people shortage. AI could help solve it: less administrative burden, faster knowledge work and scarce expertise multiplied, so there is more time for patient care.

Much of the conversation around AI focuses on job displacement. But healthcare is already dealing with the opposite problem: a persistent shortage of physicians, nurses, administrative staff, and other healthcare professionals, while the amount of work continues to grow.

In that environment, the more important question may not be “Which jobs will AI replace?”

It’s “How can AI help scarce healthcare workers spend more time actually providing care?”

That’s what we’re seeing firsthand at Inference Analytics AI. Across our work with academic medical centers and more than 3,000 users of our products, some of the most valuable applications of AI are about augmenting people: reducing administrative burden, accelerating knowledge-intensive workflows, and giving time back to healthcare professionals.

We started building healthcare text-generation models roughly three years before ChatGPT launched. The technology has changed enormously since then, but the objective remains remarkably consistent:

Use AI to make scarce human expertise more productive, not simply to replace it.
