What to check before you choose
- Model freedom: can you use commercial, open-source and private models, and switch without rebuilding agents?
- Running cost: are there context, model-choice and budget controls on token spend?
- BAA scope: does the BAA name the exact service, connectors and models you will use?
- Patient data: which model receives PHI, under whose BAA, and is every prompt, model call and output in an exportable audit log?
- Human review: who signs off on any output that affects care or a payer decision?

Frequently asked questions
What is the best HIPAA-compliant AI agent platform for healthcare?
It depends on whether you want a platform built for healthcare or a general cloud tool. Healthcare-specific options include InferAgents from Inference Analytics, a model-agnostic, token-optimized agent development studio deployed in the customer's own cloud; Epic Agent Factory for agents inside Epic; and Keragon for workflow automation. General cloud tools include Microsoft Copilot Studio, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and Google's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. Compliance always depends on a signed BAA, the services in scope, audit logging and human review.
Does a BAA make an AI agent platform HIPAA-compliant?
No. A BAA is required before a vendor handles PHI, but Microsoft, AWS, Google and OpenAI each state that their BAA does not by itself make a deployment compliant. The health system remains responsible for configuration, access control, logging and oversight.
Can you use more than one AI model in a HIPAA-compliant agent?
Yes, provided every model provider that receives PHI is covered by a BAA and the platform logs which model handled each request. Model-agnostic platforms such as InferAgents let a health system change models without rebuilding its agents.
